Woke up this morning at 7am to go to the bathroom and I looked outside the window at blue skies and sunshine. Thought to myself it was a great day for the beach. Climbed back into bed closed my eyes for a little extra sleep in. Woke up at 8am to loud banging sounds. When I opened my eyes I was very surprised to see how dark the room was. I went over to the window, opened the curtains and got the fright of my life. The sand/rain storm that rolled in was unbelievable and unless you were awake at that time and got to see it for yourself you wouldn’t believe it. All of a sudden the sun was nowhere in sight and it was as if it was 8pm and not 8am anymore. It was completely dark. The street lights came back on, cars had their headlight on. While my husband thought it was “awesome” I was pretty scared… and Max was scared too. The wind was insane and when the dust left, the rain kicked in. What a freak storm this was. And about 15 minutes later it was still storming but at least it was light.
Below are some photos my friend sent me.
Thanks Mirella.
Since I have been “self-employed” I have noticed one very big thing in Kuwait. HARDLY ANYBODY WORKS! Seriously, I go to the gym and it’s almost as busy as it is over the weekend, I go to the malls and it’s the same thing. As I sit here and type this I look over at the sea and it’s still filled with boats and jet skiing alike. And it’s not just the youth on holiday, and it’s not just house wives either. It’s also fully grown functional adult men, what do they do with their time and how do they earn a living in this country? Or are they all Kuwaitis who perhaps already have money and don’t feel the need to work anymore. Very strange… oh, and they’re all happy!
And all I feel like for dinner – carrots, avocado pear, Chocos breakfast cereal. Ok no not all mixed together but one at a time spread out over the course of my evening. After a long day of shooting, followed by grocery shopping and walking the dog it’s the best I could come up with… sad I know.
Anyway onto week 12 of being pregnant in Kuwait this is what the little monkey looks like this week.
And feeling good so far, still tired in the early evenings, not really nauseous anymore which is awesome… still getting slight dizzy spells from time to time, but all in all baby seems to be behaving really well so I think I’m pretty lucky so far… makes me think I’m having a boy
I think girls would be more high maintenance for some reason. Either way we’ll find out in mid May what we’re blessed with. A pink one or a blue one…
Listening to the Rolling Stones – “Beast of Burden” catching up on emails counting down the days till I’m “self-employed” 3 days to go!!
All right fine so I’m pregnant in Kuwait. It’s our first baby and we’re miles and miles away from friends and family. We are not from a culture where we have 3 nannies and 2 house keepers to run after the baby for us. We’re from a culture where you pretty much do everything yourself and if you’re lucky you can have a part-time house keeper to help you clean the house while mom looks after baby and works on the side. So usually with friends and family by your side this is very much doable as you have plenty of help and advice on hand and granny lives down the street so if you want an afternoon “off” you can drop your little peach-pie off with her and have yourself a little “me time”.
Doing this for the first time so far away from your comfort zone, in a foreign country, is going to be a little challenging. And yes a bit scary too. I know, I know… a lot of people here do it so if they can do it so can I… right?
Just to update you all… I am 11 weeks along now. Little monkey will make his or her great arrival in mid October. October babies ROCK!! So far I’ve had slight nausea (but no vomiting thank goodness), dizzy spells that come and go… oh and before, where i could easily slip in 7 cups of tea into my daily routine I can’t even stomach one. Oh, and chocolate milk is my new best friend. Pretty easy-going so far touch wood.
Oh, and my mom passed away 8 months ago so if there are any moms out there who can offer up good advice, I’m all ears.
This is what the little guy/girl looks like at 11 weeks…
OK so maybe it’s just me and maybe it’s because I did not grow up knowing the significance behind spraying white foam on cars but surely there has got to be a better way to celebrate such a proud day in Kuwait’s history than this. Than spending 4 days doing the same thing blocking roads, spraying cars, and leaving the country in such a state (trash and little everywhere). In my opinion the above in nothing to be proud of. And this is AFTER they had cleaned up. Surely there has to be a more progressive, productive way of celebrating something over 4 days… maybe it just needs to be better managed, then again, maybe I’m missing something. If I am, could someone please educate me?
Right, now this is a really big lesson for all you peeps out there who have no idea what this is. If you live in Kuwait and this is your first liberation weekend this is a MUST read. If you live outside the country then this will be an interesting read for you and you probably won’t quite believe what goes on here. Ok so if you’re interested in the history behind liberation day and national day then click here:
Right now for what happens over the weekend. Well, all the locals head to the streets in their cars and drive around. Sounds pretty boring right? WRONG – the also line the streets and spray white foam over all the cars that go past. and heaven help you if you forget to lock your doors because they will open the door and spray the inside of your car as well! In addition to this they also dress their cars up and themselves in all sorts of patriotic Kuwaiti colors and attire. It’s gets pretty interesting and yes it is festive but just make sure that you’re home at about 3:30 in the afternoon otherwise you’ll be stuck in traffic gridlock on the main roads and by the time you eventually get home your pretty silver car will be foamy white.
I took this photo driving home from work last night.
Keep an eye out over the next couple of days I’ll be taking lots of pics to keep you entertained. Oh, and my dad is visiting too – ha ha ha, he’s going to wonder what the hell kind of country I’m living in!!
